What Tr4wl does with the access it asks for. Last updated 28 August 2026.

The short version

Nothing about your files ever leaves your Mac. Tr4wl has no accounts, no analytics and no telemetry. It talks to the network for exactly two things: your licence, and checking whether a new version of Tr4wl exists.

The update check is a plain download of a small file listing the current version. It sends nothing about you, your Mac or your files, and Tr4wl never uploads anything. You can turn it off in Settings.

What Tr4wl reads

Tr4wl asks macOS for Full Disk Access, because that is the only way anything is allowed to read ~/Library, other apps' containers, and the inside of .app bundles. Those are the folders it exists to search.

• Filenames, sizes and dates. This is the index.
• File contents only for the files you explicitly run a content search over, and only while that search is running. Nothing is stored.

The index is a single file inside the app's own support folder, excluded from Time Machine. Delete Tr4wl and the index goes with it.

What Tr4wl sends

Three requests exist, all to your licence provider:

• Activation, once, when you enter your licence key.
• An occasional re-check of that activation.
• Update checks, to see whether a newer version exists.

Those requests contain your licence key and activation id. No file names, ever. No paths, no counts, no contents, no identifiers derived from your files.

Who else is involved

Payments and licence keys are handled by Polar, who are the merchant of record for the sale. When you buy, you give Polar your email and payment details; we never see your card. Their privacy terms cover that part of the transaction. We see the email address attached to your licence, and we use it to answer you if you write to us.

Updates are delivered over HTTPS from our own domain. There is no third-party analytics, crash-reporting or advertising code in the app.

Your data, and getting rid of it

There is no account to delete, because there is no account. Your licence record lives in your own Keychain and a file in the app's support folder. Deactivate This Mac in the app, or the same button in your customer portal, removes the activation. If you want the email on your licence removed from our records, write to us and we will do it.

Children

Tr4wl is a developer tool. It is not directed at children and collects nothing from anyone.
